Getting Back Into The Swing Of Things

Monday, March 02, 2015

Although we're heading into the third month of 2015 I have only just started back at university, meaning that getting back to normality has only just begun. My first week as a third year design student is complete and I can already tell this year is going to be a killer. I mean this as both a positive and a negative; I've got the feeling I'm heading towards some awesome design work, but the journey to that is going to be very mentally and physically draining. The workload is almost double the size from last year, but with the skills I have gained in the past twelve months, I should be able to handle it pretty well.

Being a third year student I am finally narrowing down what type of design I would like to go into. I've always loved typography, and I've finally decided that I want to go into Editorial Design, and hopefully work for a magazine, book company or just anywhere that offers me editorial design work. I'm super excited for my classes this year, they're a reflection of my career dreams and I can't imagine myself doing anything better than what I'm doing right now. And what's better, is that at the end of the year I can apply for some summer work and potentially get an internship doing freelance design!

In the past month I have moved into a new flat and it really feels like this year is a new beginning. Living with a new set of flatmates in a homely environment has made me so much happier than I was last year. I've realised just how much difference the environment can make to my well being and evidently my design work. In accordance to my flat's layout, I have been able to separate my office space to my sleeping space, which apparently is a good thing to do. Separating these spaces spatially helps separating them mentally. So when I go to bed, I don't see my desk in the corner of my eye and my mind doesn't dwell on what I need to do. I have however kept a couple of visual diaries next to my bed incase some kind of genius design ideas come to me in my sleep, but ultimately I like to keep these areas apart.

I mentioned in my New Year blog post in January that I'd like to grow as a designer in 2015 and I finally understand what I meant by that. I'm going to step up my game this year and am going to push myself from being a B student into an A average student. I want to believe that I can do this and I am a great designer and I will make a career out of my degree. There are so many opportunities out there, and if I continue to doubt myself, I will never be able to get there.

How's your year going for you so far? Would you like to see a room/flat tour post in the future? I hope you're having a great start to school, university or whatever path you're travelling on.
